Choose a good subject

Most colleges will give you a few different topic ideas to choose from. The subject you choose is a reflection on you, so choose a good one. You want to show the recording team who you are, but you don’t want to choose a hot button topic that can have a negative impact.

Bad topics can be your sex life, past drug and alcohol use, imprisonment, political or religious rants, pity (woe is me), or your summer abroad. Choose a topic you are sure of, something you can turn into a “wow” essay.

Research. This is essential when writing a high-quality college essay. You must have some knowledge of what you are writing about. This does not mean that you need to know every detail or unimportant fact, but you must acquire a basic sense of what the subject is and where to find the relevant material.

I’ve found that doing extensive Google and Yahoo searches is great for gaining such knowledge. But don’t just use the basic search engine function. Use ‘Google Scholar’ to find scientific journals. Also, take advantage of the research tools of your university library. They can be very helpful in getting information on important topics, especially in specific areas that may not provide much information on the internet.

* Write it yourself. Having someone else write it for you is not a good idea. A good essay should carry your voice – not your father’s or your uncle’s. Remember: The biggest crime in college essay writing is trying to sound like a 40-year-old professional when you’re only 17.

However, if you volunteered to volunteer at an orphanage or hospital while on vacation, that is a topic to focus on.

* Do not write to over impress, write to express. Don’t blow up your performance. Also, writing about what you think the admissions staff wants to hear is not a good idea. Talking about the current political situation will not be as interesting as your own experiences. Memorize what you know.

Please Provide Details in College Essay

An excellent lecture essay can be compared to a short story. Give the reader enough details so that they will see and feel what you are saying. Give names to all the people you talk about and the places you go. These things will add depth to your essay, making the admissions officer feel like you care about their reading experience.

* Be specific. Avoid general statements, clichés, and predictable writing. Instead, use specific details when describing your experiences or articulating your ideas.

* Inject passion and creativity into your work to avoid a boring, monotonous tone. Show intellectual curiosity and knowledge with a mix of creativity. Talk about your passion for your career choice. The Admissions Officer will read your essay from hundreds or thousands of others. What he will remember in the end is the one who moved him with infectious passion and youthful enthusiasm.

Brainstorm and organize. Some people think brainstorming is so stupid, but it is extremely helpful in laying the foundation of your essay. You have to think about how you want to present your topic and the attitude you want to adopt. If it’s a research paper, brainstorm how to organize the information in a way that will captivate your professor. Speaking of organization, you should always write down the authentic and step by step how you plan to write your essay.

Divide it into a list, starting with the Intro, then go to Sections 1, 2, 3, and so on and so on until you come to your conclusion. This makes it much easier to stay on track when writing a great essay.

When I talk about size, I mean the text size and the distance of your paper. The general format requirements are text size 12, Times New Roman and double spaces. But this can vary from class to class, so keep that in mind.

When quoting, make sure you know exactly which quote the professor wants. This can range from MLA, APA to Turabian / Chicago Style. Each quote has its own set of requirements when creating quotes in the text and making your list of bibliographies/works cited, so make sure you understand what is necessary for your college essay. Quotes in the text are usually (insert information here) or footnote with small numbers next to your text followed by a small line of information at the bottom of each page.

* Proofreading. There is no room for typos and grammatical errors in your essays. Read and reread your work until you are satisfied with it. Then have someone else read it to be sure.
